During the 2025 "Lighting and tyres" campaign, the ACL inspected 5,749 vehicles, 26.5% of which required on-the-spot adjustments or were found to have non-compliant tyres.

Time to take extra care!
From 15 September, it’s back to school for more than 120,000 pupils, including 64,255 in primary education. That means the areas around schools will be much busier again. So once again, the message to all road users is simple: take extra care and look out for one another!
The new school year starts in stages. Primary schools reopen on Tuesday 15 September, followed by pupils starting their first year of secondary school (7e) on Wednesday and all other secondary school pupils on Thursday. Three mornings when, after the summer holidays, pavements and areas around schools will suddenly be much busier again.
Over the past six years, the number of pupils in primary and secondary education has increased by more than 12%. This year alone, 2,200 more pupils will be making their way to school than last year.
The school route starts before the first day of school
ACL and Sécurité Routière recommend planning the school route together with your child before the start of term and walking it several times. Remember: the shortest route is not always the safest. A small detour can be well worth it if it helps avoid dangerous road crossings.
Adults and older children should remember that they are role models for younger children. Children should always be clearly visible in traffic and should always get out of the car on the pavement side. Anyone travelling by bike or kick scooter should wear a helmet.
The team of Sécurité Routière has put together important advice for children aged three and over in its “Klenge Guide fir op d’Stroos.”
Crossing the road safely
Traffic lights and pedestrian crossings make crossing the road safer, but they are no substitute for looking carefully left and right. Children should only cross once all vehicles have come to a complete stop. Making eye contact with other road users provides additional reassurance.
Extra care is needed in places with poor visibility, such as between parked cars or near bends. Vehicles can also appear suddenly from garages and driveways.
For pedestrians
- Use the pavement whenever possible. If there is none, walk on the left-hand side of the road, facing oncoming traffic.
- Before crossing, look left, right and left again.
- Only cross once all vehicles have come to a complete stop.
- Stay visible with light-coloured clothing and reflective items.
- Put your phone away and take out your earphones!
For road users
- Take extra care around schools and bus stops.
- Adjust your speed and be ready to brake at any moment.
- Adjust your speed so you can react at any time. Children are easier to overlook because of their size and may not always be able to judge dangers or speeds correctly.
- Keep a safe distance from other road users.
Increased police presence
As every year, the traffic police will have an increased presence around schools.
